Lawn Care,Planting & General Garden Maintenance Tips and Advice For April

Spring is finally here and temperatures are beginning to rise. The sun is shining,daffodils blooming and the days are getting longer, and now is the time to start thinking about preparing your lawn for summer and giving the grass its first cut of the year.

In Maidstone , Kent , also known as The Garden of England , average monthly temperatures for April are 9 degrees centigrade with some days being very warm and sunny. But don’t be fooled. Summer isn’t here yet and we are still susceptible to night frosts so resist the temptation to put out vulnerable bedding palnts until at least the end of the month.

However,if you haven’t done so already now is the time to be planting summer flowering bulbs and perennials like Geraniums. If possible plan your planting to ensure continuous colour throughout the summer. In mild areas like here in the south east you can also think about planting your hanging baskets for summer,but wait until nearer the end of the month.

Use some general purpose fertiliser on borders and flowerbeds and make sure you keep weeds under control throughout the garden. Deadhead daffodils,pansies,tulips and other spring bedding palnts and if we do have a sustained dry period keep all plants whether in beds or pots sufficiently watered.

Lawns

Feed the grass with a spring lawn fertiliser with a high nitrogen content as this encourages strong,healthy growth.

Mow the grass as soon as it starts growing but be sure to set the mower blades to a higher height setting for the first few cuts and gradually lower as the weather warms up and the grass grows faster.

If you want a classic striped effect in your lawn you will need a mower with a rear roller as it’s this that creates the stripe. Rear roller lawnmowers are available in petrol,electric corded and cordless models with Argos having a wide selection of reasonably priced lawnmowers and other garden tools.

April and May are the ideal time for sowing new lawns or over-seeding bare patches on suitably prepared soil.
