Indian Sandstone Patio Cleaning Services in Kent & London
As you can see in the images above and below, these sandstone patios have been colonised by algae. In places the multiple layers of algae and lichen black spots are so dense they have turned areas of the stone slabs black.
Lichen are notoriously difficult to remove as they literally embed themselves into paving and require specialist products to kill them off before pressure washing. They are a combination of two organisms, algae and fungus, and unless treated will continue to spread across paving and other surfaces. In the UK they are most commonly black and white in colour and circular in shape, but there are many other species and colour variations. Water pressure alone will not remove black spots.
Gleam Team’s patio cleaning service in Kent and London uses safe, approved products to quickly and effectively kill and remove all types of algae and lichen spots.
The owners of these properties were understandably delighted with the results of Gleam Team’s professional patio cleaning service and the transformation it made to their gardens.
Soft Washing Natural Stone
Soft wash is a low pressure method of cleaning natural stone and avoiding the risk of damage to the stone or mortar joints. It uses the same highly effective biocides applied at a very low pressure through a nozzle or water fed pole brush head that is lower than a garden hose.
It produces the same excellent results while protecting fragile surfaces.
Patio Repointing
Strong mortar joints between slabs are essential to maintain the strength of the patio, hold slabs in place and to improve its appearance. Over time these joints begin to crumble and mortar is lost from the joint. Sometimes it’s possible to just fill in the gaps with fresh mortar and this is something we can do.
However, if the joints are starting to break up across the whole patio it may be necessary to replace them completely by removing the existing mortar and repointing the entire structure at the same time. Removing the old mortar is known as ‘raking out’ and is usually done with chisels and lump hammers or mallets. Once the old material is gone fresh jointing material is added in the colour chosen by the customer. This is another service we offer as part of our comprehensive patio cleaning and refurbishment services in Kent, London, West Sussex and the south east region.
Indian Sandstone Patio Cleaning and Sealing
The natural stone patios shown above were also treated with 2 coats of a clear finish paving sealant to. This sealer does not affect the appearance of the stone but contains a fungicide and protects against :
- algae and lichen
- fading caused by sunlight
- water penetration
- food and drink spillages
Patio sealants are available in a range of finishes that includes colour enhancer. A colour enhancing sealant has the effect of darkening the stone and can be useful when sandstone has faded and lost much of its original colour. However, it is not something we would usually recommend because it’s unnecessary and after we’ve cleaned and restored your stone patio the natural beauty of the stone doesn’t need any enhancement.

Block Paving Refurbishment – Clean, Resand & Seal
Our block and brick paving refurbishment service in Kent and London has 3 elements to it :
- Cleaning – pressure washing to remove dirt, staining and weeds growing in the joints
- Resanding – once it’s dried sweeping kiln dried sand to fill the joints
- Sealing – applying a clear finish sealer that does not affect the appearance of paving but ‘stabilises’ or hardens the jointing sand to stop it being washed away by rain and remain in the joints. It also provides a protective barrier for the blocks against oil and petrol leaks and other staining.
When we clean block pavers we are able to remove dirt and all types of stains as well as black and green algae, and white and black spot lichens.
We can remove stains caused by oil, brake fluid, petrol, paint, varnish and more.
Cost of Block Paving Refurbishment?
Gleam Team’s block paving cleaning, resanding and sealing service in Kent and London costs only £7 – £8 per square metre. Larger areas more than 70 sqm in size are priced at a lower rate depending on size and condition.
